David Ellefson Bringing Bass Lessons to JamPlay, LLC

JamPlay.com, a leading online educational platform for aspiring guitarists, is now expanding its focus to include bass guitar lessons. Bass lessons were filmed throughout 2012 and were made available in early 2013, with many lesson contributions from David Ellefson of Megadeth.

An Ohio-based company founded in 2006, JamPlay utilizes high definition video to present guitar lessons to students across the world. As of March, 2013, the company offers over 1100 hours of video based lessons from 60+ instructors, all accessible online on the desktop or mobile device. Ellefson is one of the first players to add online bass lessons material to the expanding platform.

Concluded on March 30th 2012, the week-long filming session resulted in three separate lesson sets, each with a distinct focus.

Beginner Lessons

Phase 1 - Beginner Bass Lessons

In this lesson set, David introduces the instrument as if you have never played a note, and builds a foundation for your playing. The series concludes with playing simple melodies and developing a strong practice routine.

Metal Bass Lessons

Phase 2 - Metal Series

David offers a structured lesson set focusing on heavy metal techniques, tonalities, and playing style, with the end goal of mastering a thrash-based musical excerpt. Lessons also offer ideas for creating bass lines with style.

Learn Megadeth Songs

Phase 3 - Learn Megadeth Songs

David takes the time to breakdown a few classic Megadeth tunes, as well as a few songs off the band's latest release. Along with a riff-by-riff breakdown, he also demonstrates the song in its entirety.

Artist Series Lessons

Artist Series

This exclusive set of lessons presents David's unique style and how he utilizes the instrument. David also covers the evolution of his tone and playing style from record-to-record in working with Megadeth.

“For years I've had people ask me how to play 'Peace Sells' and that's great, but if you nail down the basics and build a foundation, you can play just about any tune … so I felt a beginner series was critical”. Ellefson, who first started in Megadeth in 1983, also emphasizes the importance of rhythm in developing as a musician. “You want to pay your bills? Don't forget this: be in tune, and be in time” said Ellefson.
