By the end of the 10-week course you will be able to learn songs by ear. During the first five weeks, we will cover how to learn melodies that use the major/minor pentatonic scale, blues scale, Major/minor scale, and melodic/harmonic minor scale. During weeks 6-10, we will cover how to learn chord progressions by ear that use power chords, barre chords, and slash chords. We will progress from easy to more difficult melodies and chords. These skills are essential if you want to learn songs, and a magnificent tool for any aspiring songwriter.

These next six weeks are going to get you comfortably moving around the neck using simple scale patterns AND using your ears in a whole new way. That's right, we're going to start plearning how to improvise! You may think of 10-minute Prog Rock songs, or your favorite Jam Band and think "I could never learn how to go on and on for a 6 minute guitar solo". It's true that there are many masters of improv out there, but the underlying mindset and skillset necessary to improvise is something that every beginner guitar player should learn.

Learn to compose your own fingerstyle compositions! Jim will walk you through the process of taking separate elements such as chords, a melody, and a baseline and weaving them into one tight and honed fingerstyle masterpiece. Don't worry, this is not as complicated as it sounds, especially for basic arrangements; the end product, however, will be mindblowing and have everyone you know wondering when you got so good.

Michael "Hawkeye" Herman, a critically acclaimed teacher, songwriter, and performed will delve deep into the history of the blues. From the earliest blues styles to contemporary playing, Hawkeye will share his extensive knowledge in the history of blues guitar, it's regional development, and how to approach and play in a broad variety of blues guitar styles.

Justin Roth, a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter, will guide students through the creation of their own song. He will cover the most important including whether to write music or lyrics first, how to come up with song ideas, choosing a song form, honing your vision of the song, prosody and more! By the end of this series everyone will have completed their own song from start to finish.
