Understanding Time Signatures

Chapter 1: (09:43) Understanding Time Signatures Definition of a Time Signature

A time signature is a ratio or fraction that occurs at the beginning of a piece of music. It immediately follows the key signature. A time signature is written with two numbers on top of one another. In text, the ratio is written as a simple fraction (4/4). This ratio is used to indicate the metric properties of the piece. For this reason, the time signature can also be called the "meter signature." The top number in the ratio indicates how many beats occur within a measure. The bottom number indicates which note value receives the beat.

Simple Meters

The most common time signature in Western music is 4/4 time. Often, this time signature is referred to as "common time." This key signature can be written with an uppercase letter "C" opposed to the traditional fraction. In a measure of 4/4 time, top number indicates that there are four beats per measure. When a four occurs in the bottom portion of a time signature, the quarter note receives the beat. This means that a measure of 4/4 time that consists of four quarter notes should be counted as follows: "1, 2, 3, 4."

4/4, or common time, is an example of a "simple meter." Time signatures in which the measure can be equally divided into two parts are called simple meters. Another example of a simple meter is 6/8 time.

Duple Meters

Common time is also an example of a "duple" meter. Duple meters are time signatures whose basic pulse unit occurs in groups of two. Some common examples are 4/4 and 2/4.

Compound Meters

Compound Meters are time signatures in which the basic pulse is subdivided into groups of three. The most common examples are 6/8 and 12/8. 6/8 is said to be a compound duple meter because it consists of two groups of three eighth notes. 12/8 is also a compound duple meter. It consists of four groups of four eighth notes. Some music theorists refer to this signature as a compound quadruple meter because the measure is subdivided into four equal parts.

In time signatures such as 6/8 and 12/8, the eighth note receives the beat. For example, 6/8 indicates that each measure consists of six eighth notes. The eighth notes are divided into two groups of three. A measure of 6/8 consisting solely of eighth notes should be counted as follows: "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6." However, some pieces written in 6/8 are too fast to be counted in such away. In this case, the first set of eighth notes is counted as "1." The second group is counted as "2." Some popular songs that are written in 6/8 are "We Are the Champions" by Queen and "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica. Both Led Zeppelin's "Dazed and Confused" and R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts" are written in 12/8.

Triple Meters

Triple Meters are time signatures whose basic pulse unit occurs in groups of three. 3/4 and 9/8 are the most commonly used triple meters. Since a measure of 3/4 consists of three quarter notes, it is counted as follows: "1, 2, 3." The waltz is a compositional form that is written in 3/4 time. The waltz has a very strong "oom, pah, pah" rhythmic pulse in which the last two beats in the measure are stressed.

Complex Meters

These time signatures do not fit into the typical categories of duple and triple. Instead, these time signatures are asymmetric and irregular. The top number is usually a prime number such as 5, 7, 11 or a larger prime number such as 13. Some common examples of complex meters are 7/8, 7/4, and 5/4. "Money" by Pink Floyd and "Outshined" by Soundgarden are written in 7/4 time. "Them Bones" by Alice in Chains is a popular rock song written in "7/8." For the two most recent Tool albums, guitarist Adam Jones wrote numerous songs in 5/4 time. A few examples are "Vicarious," "The Grudge," and "The Patient."

Its clear to me everything u taught in this lesson except counting on 6/8, I am confused while u say 8th notes count as 1 n 2 n 3 n... but u counted as 1 2 3 4 5 6 shouldn't it b 1 n 2 n 3 n 4 n 5 n 6 n.?

About Brad Henecke View Full Biography Brad Henecke was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on May 5th of 1963. He has been a fan of music for as long as he & his family can remember. You could always find him running around the farm wailing on his cardboard guitar, pretending to be a member of the rock band KISS. Additional inspiration came during his first concert when he got the chance to see Boston & Sammy Hagar in the early 1970's.

This opened up a whole new world of rock and roll music for him; his parents noticed his growing interest in music and enrolled him into guitar lessons when he was 13.

From there he jumped into two years of lessons at a local music store in Cedar Rapids. After discovering Eddie Van Halen, Brad knew that the guitar would always be a part of his life. He took his love throughout the city as he played as a pit musician & jammed at parties for friends.

This made him thirsty for more. He enrolled classes at Kirkwood Community College & also took lessons from the one & only Craig-Erickson (www.craig-erickson.com).

His love for music landed him a gig opening for Molly Hatchet in Cedar Rapids with a band called "Slap & Tickle". He has also played in the Greeley Stampede show for quite a few years with "True North".

Brad is currently playing in Greeley, Colorado with a rock band titled "Ragged Doll". They play a wide variety of music with an emphasis on classic rock from the 60's to present, with Brad playing electric guitar in the five piece lineup.

He currently jams on his all-time favorite guitar: a Paul Reed Smith Custom 24. Beyond guitar, he plays also plays drums & bass guitar. He has also been known to thrash a banjo from time to time. He is still actively playing & passing his 31 years of playing experience on to others (you!).
