Four Chord Types

To get going with Ian's curriculum you'll first need to establish a baseline of the E chord shapes that you must master. The basic major and minor open E shapes should be familiar to you already. You'll cover those as well as the basic shapes for diminished and augmented E chords.

E Lydian

Now that you have your basic chord shapes mastered it's time to start looking at melodic content in the context of E, starting with E Lydian. In this lesson Ian discusses this mode and the harmonization of each of the scale tones.

E Lydian: Strings 1 & 2

In the previous lesson you harmonized the lydian scale with your familiar chord shapes. It's not time to start making a few melodies. Ian covers the scale across the first and second strings of the guitar and imparts some wisdom on how to play melodically on those strings.

E Ionian Mode

Dorian Mode: Strings 1, 2 & 3

Lesson 9 begins a look at the Dorian mode in the key of E. As usual, you'll start by learning the scale on the first three strings, then move to some improvisation using them.

It's time to start looking at yet another mode of the E major scale. Working our way down to no accidentals, we find ourselves in the key of G and E Aeolian. Ian starts in reverse for the look at this mode, covering the lowest three strings.
