Long Way Down

Chris Liepe takes an in depth look at the song "Long Way Down" by the Goo Goo Dolls. This song is a great example of how to write simple, powerful, guitar-driven songs like those that were very popular in the 90's alternative rock scene.

I love the views and the layout. Gotta agree with stratmusic on this. As well, the graphics you used are extraordinaire! A big leap from the phase one lessons with Steve. LOL!

Love the lesson and I’ve been on Chris’s live cam’s. Great stuff! BUT you are making me motion sick with all the quick cuts. :( While Chris is explaining the main riff at say 4:00 to 4:30 into that section, you keep cutting from a full view of Chris to a multi Camera view. I counted EIGHT TIMES in that 30 second block. About the time I figured out where to look, you cut to the other view. Very hard to follow visually. Reedit?

jboothjbooth replied on February 24th, 2012

I would recommend setting an a-b loop on the part around 04:40 till he's finished explaining. I think watching that section on loop will be super helpful for the problem you described.

rangorango replied on February 25th, 2012

I'll work through it. But do you see my point? I know, I know, everybody's and expert! LOL! FWIW - I'm just saying as a student, All the cuts interfere with learning the material.

jboothjbooth replied on February 26th, 2012

I do, but unfortunately we don't have the time to do re-edits over issues that deal more with preference then a direct error, so this is something we will keep track of in the future but for this particular lesson I do recommend using the looping.

thesnowdogthesnowdog replied on February 25th, 2012

FWIW, I don't really see your problem there. In that section he's really describing the difference in the sound between the two approaches anyway.

Superb!

jj90jj90 replied on February 22nd, 2012

Hell yeah! I love the new camera angle system! I'm a leftie and really have a lot of problem with the angle from above, but this lesson combines both the front and above angle, so everyone can pick the angle they like! Probs for the JP-staff for having this problem solved for me. Hope you guys will do a lot more lessons with these camera angles. Also a monster tutorial Chris, really going in depth here. Thanks again!

popsarockrpopsarockr replied on February 21st, 2012

Great lesson Chris. Really a good break down on this song. I love how you put emphasis on all the nuances. And the video production was pro. Just an exceptional job by everyone. Nuff said!

jboothjbooth replied on February 21st, 2012

looks amazing tyler, great job

stratmusicstratmusic replied on February 21st, 2012

This is FANTASTIC!! I love all the different camera angles! I find it so helpful to have all those views. Depending on what part of the lesson/song I am working on, I find each particular angle helps in a different way...so all bases are covered and I can just focus in on whichever angle is helping me the most at that time. Great song lesson Chris. Amazing job on the video editing Jamplay staff!!

Glad you like it Jill ;) It may take some time to respond to member requests, but we do listen!

About Chris Liepe View Full Biography Chris Liepe was born on September 17th, 1981 in Portland OR. His first instrument was piano which he pursued until discovering his love for the electric guitar in high school. He became fans of such groups as Soundgarden, Collective Soul and U2 inspiring him to start singing, songwriting and helping others in their musical endeavors with teaching, co-writing and album production.

Having moved to Colorado with his family, he began gigging, recording and teaching in a number of music stores as well as out of his apartment until deciding to pursue music full time. He moved to Denver, CO to complete a Bachelors in Music Technology and was then hired on by Sweetwater Productions, a division of Sweetwater Sound and one of the largest, most successful recording studios in the Midwest.

Chris spent nearly 4 years at Sweetwater as a producer, recording engineer, studio musician and writer. During this time he had the privilege of working with many artists including Augustana, Landon Pigg, Jars of Clay, and Mercy Me. He also wrote for and played on numerous independent albums and hundreds of radio/TV commercials.

Wanting to get back to his favorite State in the world (Colorado) and feeling the urge to 'go freelance', Chris moved to Greeley, CO and opened his own recording and teaching studio. He continues to write and produce music for artists and agencies and is happy to be among the proud JamPlay.com instructors.
