I really like these lessons about the big picture and freeing the mind from always having to do the right thing. The more I listen to these, the more I realize this fear of experimenting was the true main reason why I stopped playing guitar and moved to the bass as a kid (and why it took me so many years and bands to decide to try and go back where I had started and find out it's great fun to play the guitar!) Thanks Hawkeye Gisella p.s. I recently saw a video of Elizabeth Cotten and wow! If she could play great fingerpicking with an upside down guitar...why could't i! ;-)

hi Hawkeye, Well now you've done it. Can't get " Nobody knows when you're downs and out" out of my head! Would luv to play this one.Luv! would you mind suggesting the chords for this one and i think i can work out the fingerpicking. Thanks wow lesson #119 can't believe how much i've learned and relatively quickly.

Thanks hawkey Yes I go over and over and over and then over some more the supplemental content. I just thought there was more verses and the little taste you give on the vid is great but it's not all tabbed out just the first few measures. Thanks

Hawkeye, I can't tell you what a liberating lesson this is. For the past few months I have been diligently learning to finger pick and have gotten reasonably good at it but was using the thumb just for the bass notes and three fingers for the treble notes. It had never occurred to me before to move the patterns around. Once I did, my 12-string literally started ringing. So amazing, and such a simple tweak. Thanks!

I want all of my students to understand the joy in/of spontaneously creating blues music ... there is value in the 'mechanical' replication of music ... but that value, in my mind, is based on one's eventually being able to free oneself from the rote/mechanical methods of playing by understanding the bigger picture of how the guitar 'works' ... and as a result being able to adapt/change/alter and use what one has 'memorized' into a more personal musical statement. I'm so glad you've found that the information in this lesson has brought you to this point of perception and 'realization.' Hi Hawkeye, what advice do you have for players who hit a plateau and feel like they are stuck and can’t move past the level they are at? Sometimes it becomes frustrating to invest a lot of time and practice in fingerpicking for example and still not get something to sound the way someone else plays it. Any tips for making us feel like we are getting somewhere as guitarists for the effort we put in, that we have the ability to make continuous progress?

Thanks for your question. This is the most frequently asked question in my over 45 years of teaching guitar ... your situation is extremely common ... not rare. ;-) What you are doing is expressing your frustration with your not being able to progerss as rapidly as you'd like, or think you should. This is not a 'race to a finish line' ... this is an art form ... and we all learn art our own speed. There is no 'secret answer' ... the answer is to exhale ... stop putting pressure on yourself to learn faster ... relax ... enjoy the process of learning and practicing ... be patient with yourself ... what you're doing is learning 'muscle memory' ... you must get the information into your brain first, then your brain teaches your fingers where to go ... via repetition ... how many times you have to repeat something before you 'get it' is unimportant ... the only way of reaching the next 'level' in your playing is to be patient, follow these lessons in the order they are presented ... and don't rush anything. Your question is a common one and is based in frustration due to your assuming that you should be learning 'faster' ... and also the anxiety of wanting to 'succeed' at what others are doing ... BB King has been playing the guitar for over 80 years ... I've been playing the guitar for over 50 years ... there's no way that you're going to be able to play like BB King, or me, in a short period of time ... but you can keep working on it ... and keep your perspective about how long you've been practicing anything ... needs to be adjusted. So, take the pressure off yourself to learn quicker ... just relax and progress at your own speed. There is no 'finsih line' .... playing the guitar is a life's work ... my advice to you is to hang in there and just keep practicing ... how long it takes is not an issue ... everyone learns at their own speed in their own time. Every time you pick up the guitar to practice or play you improve, sometimes in big leaps, sometimes in very small increments ... but you DO improve every time you practice/play ... so my advice is to just relax and enjoy the process of learning and practicing and realize that you ARE improving every time you practice/play ... believe me ... it's true. Again, remember, the question you asked me is the most common question I get ... you are not the Lone Ranger ... everyone feels like you do about getting to the next level ... so, just take your time and be patient with yourself. Yes, I repeat, If your left hand (fretting hand) is playing any chord correctly, your right hand (picking hand) thumb and fingers are free to pick any of the strings and any combination of the strings simultaneously or separately ... as you wish .... creating regular picking patterns is a good way to start experimenting with the seemingly infinite possibilities ... relax, be patient, and play the blues ... as you wish. Thanks again! ;-)

So glad you got the 'blues bug,' Tonya. You're right, practice does pay off ... big time ;-). Every time you hold and play the guitar you improve ... yes, every time ... whether for five minutes or two hours ... sometimes one progresses in big leaps, and sometimes in very small 'invisible' increments ... but still one progresses a bit each time you hold/play the guitar ... it's about practice and repetition ... in order to gain freedom ('liberation') in playing the guitar as you please. I encourage you to keep practicing ... and enjoy!!! practicing ... it' should be fun ... not work ... and it's fun because you can realize the results ... improvement in your guitar skills. With over 40 years of performing experience, Michael "Hawkeye" Herman personifies the range of possibilities in blues and folk music. His dynamic blues guitar playing and vocal abilities have won him a faithful following and he leads a very active touring schedule of performances at festivals, concerts, school programs and educational workshops throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe. His original music has been included in video dramas and documentaries and in four hit theatrical productions.

In 2000, Hawkeye was awarded Philadelphia's Barrymore Award for Excellence in Theatre for best original music in a theatrical production. "Everyday Living," Hawkeye's first nationally released album from 1987, now reissued on CD, features the late blues giants Charles Brown and "Cool Papa" Sadler, and established the demand for his now long-standing festival and concert touring. His latest CDs and DVD, "Blues Alive!" (CD), "It's All Blues To Me" (CD), and "Hawkeye Live In Concert" (DVD) have been greeted with rave reviews. Hawkeye's journalistic efforts have been published in numerous national and regional blues and music-related periodicals.

In 1998 he was the recipient of the Blues Foundation's "Keeping The Blues Alive" award for achievement in education. He served on the Board of Directors of the Blues Foundation for six years. Hawkeye was inducted into the Iowa Blues Hall of fame in 2004. In September of 2005, Hawkeye composed, at the request of the British Broadcasting Company (BBC), "Katrina, Oh Katrina (Hurricane Blues)," detailing the hurricane disaster on the Gulf Coast. The song was aired to over 7 million listeners on the popular "BBC Today" program. He is the cofounder of the Rogue Valley Blues Festival, Ashland, OR.

This musician has definitely carved out a spot for himself in the contemporary acoustic blues/folk field, and has earned a reputation as one of the most accomplished artists in the genre, and audiences throughout the US/Canada/Europe have come to know and appreciate Hawkeye's talent, dedication, and captivating performances.

I'm a fifty eight year old newbie who owns a guitar which has been sitting untouched in a corner for about seven years now.
