Hey ! Nice lesson ! Just wondering did you hear you amp make a shhhh after certain notes ? Mine did the same. Do you know what is the problem ?

That was an amp that I rented for the lesson. I believe that the sound you are referring to is microphonic.....that is, part of tube is rattling or resonating at certain frequencies. Tube changes will usually fix that problem. However, you have to determine if the sound is coming from the preamp or the amp tubes, and there is a way to systematically do that, removing one tube at a time. I don't have the space or time to do it here, but if you look online, you may find a Youtube or other site explaining how to do that.

Eric, I really like your lessons. I was having trouble with using the CMAJ7 after the Amin7 when trying to sing it. I don't hear it in BBs recording. Do you use it more in the lead part of the song.

Thank you for your kind words and observations. Both Hugh McCracken (the rhythm guitarist) and the keyboardist on that original version of the tune used that minor 9th sound (or the relative major 7th), so that is where the idea came from, but I have overstated it here for the purpose of showing how to embellish the chords of a blues tune. In this case, Am7 is: a c e g and the addition of the 9th of the scale/chord is b. C major 7th is the same notes as Am9. C major 7th is: c e g b and A minor 9th is a c e g b. There are actually other embellishments made in the tune by the rhythm section, but I did not cover them all. For me it is important to understand that embellishment is a natural product of musicianship, especially in an improvisatory style like the blues. The version heard on BB's Completely Well album (the original and the radio hit) was almost never copied exactly again, since it got played thousands of times by BB and his bands.

Eric, could you give me some help with the strum pattern? I get confused with one video to the next-if it changes or not. One seems up/down, and the later video seems to change. Does that make sense?

Eric - Trust you appreciate that when you ramp up the tempo from BB's style to what you are playing - it comes out sounding more like the Doobies 'Long Train Running' than a BB thing. There is much more inflection/bending in the real deal. It scares me a bit that some folks writing in think that getting your strumming down right might replicate the song!

Yeah, that is right. It's a little more upbeat and funky than the original. That's because I have about 10 versions of BB doing the song, and I always liked the one that was a bit more contemporary. And so did BB, because I felt his playing was the most enthusiastic on that.

I generally open my strumming/picking hand so that I can sweep evenly across the strings. I would also say to have a clear representation of the song in your mind when you go to play it. Other than that, just keep playing! That's what I do/did. Thanks, Eric

hey Eric, I went back to this lesson after looking at some of your modal stuff, and I'm just wondering...why does this use an Fmajor7 as opposed to an F#major7 and in that case why is it still called a 1-4-6-5 progression? i'm really trying to understand substitutions and I get ideas like replacing the 1 with a m7b5 3 chord, or replacing a minor7 with c major 7 of the relative minor, but not much beyond that.

Nate, So, just remind yourself, this is a minor key this time. The harmony is much different (and much simpler) than the typical dominant 7th blues. - Eric

Hey Nate, Well in the A (natural) minor key/scale, you have the notes: a, b, c, d, e, f and g. The chords would usually be Am, B dim, C, Dm, Em, F, and G. Most minor progressions use a dominant or major V, so in this song we use the E7 (or variation), rather than Em. But, in any case, the VI chord would be F, or if you expand into 7ths, an Fmaj7. -- Eric

About Eric Madis View Full Biography Eric Madis is a guitarist, singer and composer, a versatile artist whose playing and compositions reflect his diverse and thorough background in American music. Whether performing in an ensemble or as a soloist, he exudes a love and a mastery of the blues that have been refined by years of experience in jazz, country, rock, and even Hawaiian music. What results are performances that include authentic renderings of old rural blues, personal interpretations of modern urban blues and jazz standards, and original music that defies strict categorization, but that draws heavily from these traditions.

Eric lives in Seattle where he leads his own ensemble, performs as a solo act and performs in the Seattle Swing Trio. He has released four CDs on Luna Records, and is currently working on a fifth. He is on the faculty of the National Guitar Workshop and Dusty Strings Music and teaches guitar privately.

Eric lived his formative years in Colorado with a family that was musical (his mother was an accomplished opera singer), and began his music study on the piano at the age of nine. He began performing shortly after picking up a guitar at ten years of age. By the age of sixteen, he was performing in Chicago-area coffeehouses. He has accompanied artists as diverse as bluesmen Big Walter Horton, Sunnyland Slim, Deacon Jones, Hawaiian luminaries Irmgaard Aluli, Kekua Fernandez, Emma Sharpe and author/poet Nikki Grimes.

He has led bands in Illinois, Texas, Colorado and Washington. He has opened shows for Robben Ford, James Cotton, Little Charlie and the Nightcats, Mem Shannon, Hawkeye Herman and author Sherman Alexie. Eric's four albums have received critical acclaim, including regional airplay and nominations from NAMA and Washington Blues Society (WBS). He has received 16 Best Blues nominations from WBS, was a finalist in the New Folk Awards at the 1981 Kerrville National Folk Festival, a finalist in the 1991 Seattle Guitar Starz competition, and has music featured on five film soundtracks. Eric has taught guitar classes at Denver Free University, University of Washington's Experimental College, Northwest Folklife Festival, National Guitar Workshop, and Canada's Guitar Workshop Plus.

Whether performing in a group or as a soloist, at a concert or a small club, teaching privately or a large workshop, Eric is a dedicated professional, with commitment to the quality of his art and to his audience.

I'm a fifty eight year old newbie who owns a guitar which has been sitting untouched in a corner for about seven years now. Last weekend I got inspired to pick it up and finally learn how to play after watching an amazing Spanish guitarist on TV. So, here I am. I'm starting at the beginning with Steve Eulberg and I couldn't be happier (except for the sore fingers :) Some day I'm going to play like Steve! I'm self employed with a hectic schedule.
