Third Pattern

Now it's time to move on to the 3rd pattern of the minor blues and pentatonic scales. Remember, these scales are very important if you wish to play lead.

Chapter 1: (0:34) Introduction Brad switches gears back to the pentatonic and blues scales. He begins by playing some blues scale licks from the third blues scale box. In this lesson, Brad demonstrates how to play both the third position boxes of both the pentatonic and blues scales.

Note: Do not continue with the third box of the minor pentatonic and blues scales until you have memorized the first two boxes. Brad briefly reviews these patterns in the following scene.
Chapter 2: (6:02) Third Position of Blues and Pentatonic Scales The third box moves us higher up in the guitar’s register. Pay very close attention to the fingerings used for this box. This particular box features a few position shifts. The scale begins in 10th position. However, the first finger reaches back to play some notes at the 9th fret. Do not deviate from the fingerings that Brad uses when playing through the scale. These fingerings will enable you to play improvised lines with the most ease.

Brad demonstrates this scale pattern by starting with the lowest note on the sixth string. This is for demonstration purposes only. When practicing any scale, always begin and end on the root note. Notice where the position shift occurs within the scale. When you reach the third string in the pattern, your first finger jumps back to play the 9th fret (E). When you reach the B string, return to playing the 10th fret with your first finger.

Make a note of where the blues notes occur within the box. The first blues note occurs on the 11th fret of both the high and low E string. An additional blues note can be added to the pattern that Brad does not discuss. This note is found at the 13th fret of the D string. Fret this note with the pinky finger.

Note: Open the “Supplemental Content” tab for fingerboard patterns of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd pentatonic/blues boxes.

Practicing Pentatonic Scales
Now that you have learned several scales, it is important to keep them organized. It is very important to devote daily practice time to scales. However, you may not have time every day to practice every single scale you know each day. For this reason, it’s a good idea to maintain a written practice log. On the first day of the week, write down which scales you practiced. This way you’ll know which scales you need to practice throughout the remainder of the week.

Once you have memorized the third box of the blues and pentatonic scale, begin to improvise within this box. Formulate some brand new licks in this position. When you feel comfortable with this new position, begin to combine it with the previous two boxes. Brad briefly demonstrates how a few possible ways to shift from one box to another. Pay careful attention to how he changes the fingering of the scales to accommodate some position shifts. This is also done to make techniques like string bending more comfortable.
Chapter 3: (0:54) Final Thoughts Brad will give you a quick break from learning scales in the following lesson. However, you should continue to practice scales each and every day. This is an absolutely essential component to your development as a musician.

I have the same question about what makes the scale Am - I understand a chord is Am because of the flattened third but what makes this scale in Am?

Every scale has its distinctive flats and sharps. Say for C major, there are no flats or sharps and if you were to play only the white keys of a piano, you'd be playing in the key of C. For G major, you'd play all the white keys except that F would be F#. For A major, you'd play white keys except C is C#, F is F# and G is G# An easier way would be to listen to the scale starting from the root note (every note can have its own scale). It would just sound off if you played the wrong sharps and flats. I find it's much more intuitive to learn theory from a keyboard. Hope this helps!

brad, how do you determine the root notes of a scale? What makes these scales in A minor?

The first position scale drawing is wrong. The scale diagram depicted for the Am scale would have the root note on the 6th string (note=A) on the fifth fret. As drawn, this is showing a F# root note. First position normally refers to frets 1-4, so this seems to be scale diagrams for position 2,3 and 4, not 1,2 and 3.

After further research, I am wrong about the diagrams being 2,3 and 4 positions. But for clarity, the first position diagram should be noted that the root note on the 6th string is being played on the 5th fret.

About Brad Henecke View Full Biography Brad Henecke was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on May 5th of 1963. He has been a fan of music for as long as he & his family can remember. You could always find him running around the farm wailing on his cardboard guitar, pretending to be a member of the rock band KISS. Additional inspiration came during his first concert when he got the chance to see Boston & Sammy Hagar in the early 1970's.

This opened up a whole new world of rock and roll music for him; his parents noticed his growing interest in music and enrolled him into guitar lessons when he was 13.

From there he jumped into two years of lessons at a local music store in Cedar Rapids. After discovering Eddie Van Halen, Brad knew that the guitar would always be a part of his life. He took his love throughout the city as he played as a pit musician & jammed at parties for friends.

This made him thirsty for more. He enrolled classes at Kirkwood Community College & also took lessons from the one & only Craig-Erickson (www.craig-erickson.com).

His love for music landed him a gig opening for Molly Hatchet in Cedar Rapids with a band called "Slap & Tickle". He has also played in the Greeley Stampede show for quite a few years with "True North".

Brad is currently playing in Greeley, Colorado with a rock band titled "Ragged Doll". They play a wide variety of music with an emphasis on classic rock from the 60's to present, with Brad playing electric guitar in the five piece lineup.

He currently jams on his all-time favorite guitar: a Paul Reed Smith Custom 24. Beyond guitar, he plays also plays drums & bass guitar. He has also been known to thrash a banjo from time to time. He is still actively playing & passing his 31 years of playing experience on to others (you!).
