Chapter 1: (00:42) Introduction Lesson Objectives

-Learn the melody to "Morning" by reading standard notation.

Process of Learning a New Piece of Music

1. Note the Title: "Morning"

2. Note the Composer: Edvard Grieg

3. Note the Key Signature: F Major

4. Note the Time Signature: 6/8

"Morning" is an example of a fast 6/8 feel. Do not count every individual eighth note as the beat. Instead, set the metronome so that it is clicking on beats 1 and 4 of each measure. This is the same way in which "Funiculi Funicula" was counted and played.

5. Note the Style and Tempo: Allegretto

"Allegretto" indicates a tempo that is slightly less fast compared to allegro. It also implies a lighter texture and feel. Think of allegretto as the middle ground between moderato and allegro.

6. Scan the Piece for Important Features

A. Musicality Issues


Notice how the melody line jumps back and forth between the first part and the second part. Bring out your part when playing the melody. Back off slightly when you are playing a chordal accompaniment within your part.

B. Accidentals

Several C# notes appear in the score. This note indicates a modulation to the relative minor key of Dm. C# is the seventh or "leading tone" in the key of D minor. It is also a part of the V chord (A major).

C. Dynamics

Do not ignore the dynamics! They are a crucial part of the piece. The dynamics of this piece start soft and get louder towards the middle. Then, they gradually wind down to a very soft volume at the end of the piece.

D. Musical Directions / Road Signs

"Poco ritard." is written above measure 20. This indicates that a slight slowing of the tempo is performed. The "a tempo" written above the following measure signals a return to the primary tempo of the piece.

E. Performing Ritardando as a Group

The person performing the first part must lead the rest of the group through the ritard. Bobbing the head up and down with the beat can help keep the other players stay together. Or, if a conductor is present, the conductor will control the ritardando.

Augmented Chords

A. Intro to Chord Theory


A thorough knowledge of how ALL CHORDS are spelled must be developed! The process of determining the individual notes in a chord may seem confusing at first, but it is a relatively simple task. Use the instructions listed below to determine the spelling of a specific augmented chord.

1. Start with the major scale corresponding to the letter name of the chord. For example, if you want to figure out the notes in C augmented, start by writing out the C major scale. Even if you wish to spell a minor chord, you must start with the major scale of the chord name.

C Major Scale: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C

The formula for an augmented triad is 1, 3, #5. In relation to the C major scale, these notes are C, E, and G# respectively.

Compared to a major triad, the augmented triad contains a raised or "augmented" fifth.

Note: Augmented chords can be written two different ways. C+ and Caug. both refer to the same chord.

B. Function of Augmented Chords

Augmented chords are often used to embellish a major triad. For example, the harmony may switch back and forth between a C major chord and C+ to create a darker, more interesting sound. Or, an augmented triad is often substituted for the V chord. This is especially common in blues music.
Chapter 3: (06:15) Technique and Finger Positions First Position Vs. Second Position

The melody lays very nicely in first position. The main melodic motif is played out of the fingering of the four string F major chord in 1st position.

Adding Slurs

Due to the tempo of this piece, Matt plays all groupings of sixteenth notes with slurs in order to maintain a smooth, legato sound. For example, the G-A segment at the end of measure two is played with a combination of hammer-ons and pull-offs. Even if you can play these sixteenth notes in time with alternate picking, you still want to use slurs to keep the melody sounding as smooth as possible. Make sure your slurs remain even and rhythmically perfect. Each sixteenth note must receive the EXACT same value!

To make sure your slurs are even, play each segment at a very slow tempo while picking the notes. This will give you a clear idea of how the rhythm should sound. Then, add the slurs back in at the same tempo. Make sure that the same rhythm is maintained! Finally, gradually work your way back up to the performance tempo.

Position Shifts

In measure 17, shift up to third position so that you can slur between the D and E notes with the first and third fingers. In the next measure, shift back to first position.

Matt opts to play measure 24 in third position as well. This measure could be played in first position, but Matt prefers the sound of the fretted E note to an open E note.

Practice Time

Pause the lesson video and practice the first part of the arrangement. Set the metronome so that it clicks on beats 1 and 4 of each measure. Begin at 60 bpm and gradually work your way up from there. When you can play the first part flawlessly at 88 bpm, return to the lesson video. Depending on your ability level, this realistically may take you 1 or 2 weeks.
Chapter 4: (01:50) Play Along Play the first part along with Matt in this scene. Make sure you are not playing any incorrect notes or rhythms!
Chapter 5: (01:26) Accompaniment Play the first part while Matt plays the second part. Be confident in your counting skills!!

About Matt Brown View Full Biography Matt Brown began playing the guitar at the age of 11. "It was a rule in my family to learn and play an instrument for at least two years. I had been introduced to a lot of great music at the time by friends and their older siblings. I was really into bands like Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Smashing Pumpkins, so the decision to pick up the guitar came pretty easily."

Matt's musical training has always followed a very structured path. He began studying the guitar with Dayton, Ohio guitar great Danny Voris. I began learning scales, chords, and basic songs like any other guitarist. After breaking his left wrist after playing for only a year, Matt began to study music theory in great detail. I wanted to keep going with my lessons, but I obviously couldn't play at all. Danny basically gave me the equivalent of a freshman year music theory course in the span of two months. These months proved to have a huge impact on Brown's approach to the instrument.

Brown continued his music education at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. He completed a degree in Classical Guitar Performance in 2002. While at Capital, he also studied jazz guitar and recording techniques in great detail. "I've never had any desire to perform jazz music. Its lack of relevance to modern culture has always turned me off. However, nothing will improve your chops more than studying this music."

Matt Brown currently resides in Dayton, Ohio. He teaches lessons locally as well as at Capital University's Community Music School. Matt's recent projects include writing and recording with his new, as of yet nameless band as well as the formation of a cover band called The Dirty Cunnies.
