Ian Argys brings you a lesson series all about creating melody, harmony and working within the modes. Starting from a basic E chord and four forms of it, you'll unlock the modes and start thinking melodically from the root concepts of the E chord.

Ian Argys presents a new way to think about modes, harmony and melody all taught from the comfort of four familiar E type chords. Lesson one delves into the concept behind this series and starts setting you up for the pre-requisite knowledge needed to successfully manage this course.

Four Chord Types

To get going with Ian's curriculum you'll first need to establish a baseline of the E chord shapes that you must master. The basic major and minor open E shapes should be familiar to you already. You'll cover those as well as the basic shapes for diminished and augmented E chords.

E Lydian

Now that you have your basic chord shapes mastered it's time to start looking at melodic content in the context of E, starting with E Lydian. In this lesson Ian discusses this mode and the harmonization of each of the scale tones.

E Lydian: Strings 1 & 2

In the previous lesson you harmonized the lydian scale with your familiar chord shapes. It's not time to start making a few melodies. Ian covers the scale across the first and second strings of the guitar and imparts some wisdom on how to play melodically on those strings.

E Lydian: Strings 3, 4, 5 & 6

Lesson 5 is another look at the E Lydian move, this time utilizing strings 3 through 6 on the guitar.

E Ionian Mode

Lesson 6 is all about the major mode. As with the other lessons you'll be taking a look at the individual notes on the strings that work in this scale and end by playing freely over a looped track.

Dorian Mode: Strings 1, 2 & 3

Lesson 9 begins a look at the Dorian mode in the key of E. As usual, you'll start by learning the scale on the first three strings, then move to some improvisation using them.

Dorian Mode: Strings 4, 5 & 6

Lesson 10 is a continuation of lesson 9. This time you'll focus on the Dorian mode played on the lower register strings.

E Aeolian: Strings 6, 5 & 4

It's time to start looking at yet another mode of the E major scale. Working our way down to no accidentals, we find ourselves in the key of G and E Aeolian. Ian starts in reverse for the look at this mode, covering the lowest three strings.

Now that you've gone through the six basic modes in the key of E, excluding Locrian, it's time to start focusing on mixed harmonic scales. In lesson 15, Ian discusses and demonstrates playing the E Harmonic Minor scale.
