Maybe I'm missing something but wouldn't it make sense to quickly just say that the major pentatonic scale leaves out the 4th and 7th and comment on purpose? Just hitting the road into playing them is a rote memory approach. This medium makes for more than that. And BTW, I did watch the others in order. No offense.

I can't, for the life of me, find anywhere on JP to print out the rest of the pentatonic scales. I would like to find all of them if they are available. Haven't looked at the major or minor scale series yet but, if the only ones posted are C, G, and F I'll be looking for those in the future also. Thank you!

On your main screen on the left side is "Teaching Tools". Press it and go to scales. You should be able to simulate every major and minor pentatonic scale. I haven't tried printing them, but if there is no function you can use you browser print function or take a screen capture and paste the screen into an image editor and crop what you don't want and print.

Nick, when playing major pentatonic scales in first position, for some chord shapes (like the A shape) there would be notes required that would be below the first fret. Do you leave those out in first position, or play them higher on the fretboard on another string? Thanks.

hey i wonder if there is something i'm missing here because i've understood the CAGED system idea for finding the chords and everything but i don't understand how this is any help with remembering all the arpeggio shapes and scales that go with it, any help would be appreciated cheers

once you have seen that video then watch lesson 5... Each of the scale position share the same root notes as the chords and are based around the chord shapes, so seeing both hand in hand is a huge asset to both visualizing and executing scales and chords all over the fretboard

Nick, I don't copmpletely under stand this application and why I would use it.?? All I see so far is it give me the abiliety to play the same Chords in different postion up and down the neck! You jump right into this lesson and I don't think most people undersatnd what it relates to. I didn't know what "CAGED" related to until I ask another Instructor? I realkly appreciate your lessons as well as seeing you on Jam Play video.

Hi Dennis - you might want to watch my first lesson in the series where I explain how the CAGED system helps us to learn our chords and scales so they cover the whole neck. Essentially it helps us to have use of the whole neck instead of being restricted to one position... when we link up all 5 shapes, this not only gives us choice, it also gives us freedom and variety in our playing - thus ultimately helping us to focus on creativity instead of being dictated to by one shape.

well - it can be used in blues/rock in combination with the minor pentatonic... or country or country rock... having said that, scales in themselves are not stylistic - its really the way you play them. But on "Sweet home Alabama" you could use D major pentatonic in combination with D minor for a really cool sound... or just on its own.

About Nick Kellie View Full Biography Nick was awarded the BBC Big Band Jazz awards "John Dankworth trophy for outstanding young soloist" and recorded a special show for BBC radio 2. He was invited to become a member of the Wigan Jazz Orchestra, and has played as part of the Wigan International Jazz Festival. He has played extensive gigs which include accompaniment, reading, soloing as well as styles ranging from Soul, R&B, Blues, Rock and Jazz in locations such as London, Norway, Germany and Greece.

Nick, with his professional approach towards music, brings enthusiasm and musicality to every project he is involved with. As well as being a guitarist Nick is also a fine vocalist and can sing lead vocals as well as backing vocals.

In London Nick has been involved with many projects such as Fresh Claim, which features Nick on guitar, and Jon Plotel on Bass (Billy Ocean, The Real Thing) and Vanessa Haynes band featuring members of Jeff Beck group, Eric Clapton’s Band and Allan Holdsworth’s Band. For a time Nick resided in Nashville TN where he played with many local musicians. In addition he also played in a Jazz Fusion band named "Shammah", with whom he has recorded an album.

Most recently Nick was signed to Digital Nations www.digital-nations.com - part of Steve Vai's record label and has recorded an album entitled "For A Brother" with his band "Nick Kellie Band". Upon hearing the album, Steve contacted Nick with regard to a release on his own label. It has been released in the USA, Europe and Asia. As well as this, Nick is also an endorsee of Elixir guitar strings, which are world-renowned.

Nick Also contributed to around 21 issues of Europe's biggest selling guitar magazine - "Total Guitar" in his series of articles, "Techniques of the rich and famous" and "Steal their style".

Having taught at Europe's top two guitar schools, Nick was also appointed as head of the guitar department at Guitar Getaways.

I'm a fifty eight year old newbie who owns a guitar which has been sitting untouched in a corner for about seven years now. Last weekend I got inspired to pick it up and finally learn how to play after watching an amazing Spanish guitarist on TV. So, here I am.
