“The Chromatic Finger Crawl”
This next lesson is going to help us inch our way closer towards awesome 2 hand sync - I call this “The Chromatic Finger Crawl”
One of the biggest issues in 2 hand sync is the escape from one string and approach to the next string… Far too many guitarists make the same mistake of adding in movements in the brain to hand connection - effectively clogging the path of information and causing a traffic jam. The outcome to that is usually when fingers start flailing into position instead of falling into position.
This exercise is going to help your overall Finger IQ by minimizing the movement between strings and honing in on the tiny details that you may have missed out on as you evolved into the guitarist you are today. It’s also going to help you discover the sensation of engaging a finger into playing position while simultaneously disengaging the finger behind it. Remember the idea of the rolling ball? That will help you tremendously as you gracefully roll and fall across these strings, instead of muscle and flail your way through these lines.
By focusing on these foundational mechanics, we can go so much deeper and further into mastering two hand sync and the idiosyncrasies that make up the perfect playing; a pursuit that is never ending, as one door just opens up into another room with another door. That’s the best part about this instrument, music, and art in general. Enjoy the journey with me, as I break down this exercise for you a bit more.
In this exercise, we’re going to play the 4 chromatic notes beginning fret 5, through fret 8, starting on the low E string. Using the same Finger Frenzy Percentage knowledge we have now, each finger will be getting its full 50% when engaged, with the fingers behind them being released and disengaged into rest position, with the action being simultaneous: just like the way a ball rolls across the floor - with one point of contact with the ground, and two opposing directions propelling it forward.
When moving to the next string, each finger stays in rest position on the string that was just played up until the exact moment it is needed on the following string… Allow the finger to relax from rest position and FALL into playing position on the next string. This forces extreme focused awareness on your synchronization with your right and left hand, as well as practicing highly efficient and economical movement with your fretting hand.
We will do this all the way up to the high E string, and then shift one fret up to frets 6-9 and descend back down the strings using the same idea… only this time, falling UP to your position. Gravity doesn’t matter in our guitar universe!
Remember… the trick to all of this is that we want to “fall into position”, not “flail into position”, and be sure to watch for the “Broken Arches” in your fingers… this is when your knuckle literally buckles in on itself - and it only happens when you’re not moving with awareness, or when you are pressing too hard!
At this point, I think my method should start to make complete sense to you. You should be on your way to developing a high level of awareness at this point, and you will begin to feel the benefits of flowing through the guitar while being awake, rather then letting yourself sleep walk through the motions. The effectiveness of The Speed of Light will be coming through now as well, with your awareness of the 3 states of guitar matter, and how we transition between them.

About Dan Sugarman View Full Biography
Dan Sugarman is a 26 year old guitarist, producer, teacher and songwriter hailing from the South Bay of Los Angeles, CA. His tenacity and dedication to the art of music and guitar led him to the lead guitar position in the internationally touring band, As Blood Runs Black. Now as a solo artist, Dan continues to work on his original music being released through Patreon, and is currently producing and engineering other bands & artists at Sugartone Studios, and composing for film & television. He also maintains an ever-growing student body as a private guitar teacher, mentor, and educator in the crafts of songwriting, creativity, and modern day recording techniques.
