Jazz Beginnings

Live Guitar Course: 10 Weeks to Basic Jazz Changes.

Music is a language and in terms of sophistication, there is no genre of improvised music that even comes close to Jazz. If you can speak jazz, there is no stone left unturned that you won’t be prepared for in any other situation. However, due to its level of complexity, beginning to play over changes can be a daunting task. In this 10 week live course, we’ll break down the basic elements of jazz into small bites, so that you’ll walk away ready to start jamming over some of the most time tested standards. So, whether you’re a Jazz enthusiast who’s never taken the plunge or someone completely foreign to the genre who’s looking to up the sophistication of their playing, this course will help you to come out of the gate swinging!

Week 1

09/12/2019 at 8pm

First Impressions

In this first lesson, we’ll not only cover jazz basics such as guitars, picks, swing and influences, but we’ll also dive right in by learning a head over a fairly common modal progression and then beginning to explore how to solo over it using just one scale.

Week 2

09/19/2019 at 8pm

Second Take

In week two, we’ll take the time to develop last week’s position by adding the most logical next chord: the V chord. Not only will you get to learn a funky head, but we’ll also cover some arpeggio exercises so that not only will you be able to solo over this very common jam session progression with last week’s scale, but you’ll also be able to hit the changes and even spice it up with a blues scale.

Week 3

09/26/2019 at 8pm

Jazz in a Nutshell

Since we’re only one chord away from the most popular progression in Jazz, we might as well knock it home. In today's lesson, you'll learn major 7 voicing options to help resolve last week's lesson. Also, we'll learn some cool licks that don't pull from outside the scale options we've been working on, as well as some arpeggio exercises to really help you hit the changes.

Week 4

10/03/2019 at 8pm

First Impressions - Round Two

There’s a lot of ground to cover on the guitar and frankly one position isn’t good enough. Ideally you’ll eventually get all 5 positions under your fingers, but let’s take it one step at a time. In this lesson, we’ll start at the beginning by rebuilding what we’ve learned so far off the A shape position.

Week 5

10/17/2019 at 8pm

Second Take - Round Two

In week five, we’ll revisit “Second Take”, the funky ii V jam from week two and see how it applies to the A shape position.

Week 6

10/24/2019 at 8pm

Jazz in a Nutshell - Round Two

A large bulk of Jazz repertoire is primarily composed of combining ii V I’s so only being able to play them in one position unfortunately just won’t cut it. In this week’s lesson we’ll apply week 3’s licks and exercises to the A position.

Week 7

10/31/2019 at 8pm

Position One Crash Course

Two positions are nice, but if we take the time to learn one more position, then we’ll really be on the way towards playing the changes. In this week’s lesson, we’ll cover the E position in a sort of crash course so that we get a feel for one of the most comfortable positions there is and to better prepare ourselves to be able to play over a 12 bar blues in this course’s final lesson.

Week 8

11/07/2019 at 8pm

Red Stone

Whether it be Freddie Hubbard or Erykah Badu, this chord progression is loved by heavy players all over the world and it will also help you begin to combine different ii V’s and therefore different scales.

Week 9

11/14/2019 at 8pm

Please Don't Tell Me You're Gone

A minor Blues progression as another option to play over some quality changes without having to know the fretboard in and out. This week we'll line up a couple of our scale options including exploring a slight alteration of one in order to address the V chord, so that we might be able to solo over this progression commonly found in Jazz, Blues and R&B.

Week 10

11/21/2019 at 8pm

The Get Down

For our final lesson in Jazz Beginnings, we’ll take on a Blues with probably more thought than you’ve ever given it before as we line up the 3 scales we’ve covered in this course as well as the Blues scale. It’s not easy, but once you’ve got it, you pretty much have all the tools to not only address each chord change, but to really say whatever you want over it. If you feel stuck playing the same old thing over a Blues, this is one class not to miss!
