Chords A to Z

Live Guitar Course: From beginner to intermediate, explore chords from a fresh perspective.

Harmony has always been one of the most fundamental aspects of any style of music. Yet as guitar players, we sometimes shy away from this world that seems to be bursting with theory and complex concepts that feel overwhelming to translate to our six strings. In this course, we will take a no-nonsense and sequential approach to learning how to construct, voice and use chords on our guitar. While we will still talk about why these chords work and what some of the overarching theory is in creating these chords, the emphasis will always be on how we can get to using these chords in our music as soon as possible! We will begin the course with our different types of power chords and first position chords, and slowly make our way through inversions, barre chords, extensions, and upper voicings. In addition to learning each technique and concept, our lessons will also have short progressions and songs with included backing tracks, so we can practice these voicings with a real band. Whether you are starting from scratch, or just need to fill in some gaps in your knowledge, this course’s comprehensive approach will make sure there is something for all guitar players!

Week 2

01/13/2021 at 5pm

More Power Chords

In our second lesson, we will continue off of week one and discuss some more interesting options we have for power chords like inversions, diminished chords, and double stops.

Week 3

01/20/2021 at 5pm

First Position Chords, Part 1

In this week’s lesson, we will look at a variety of first position chords as well as some techniques to ensure every string is ringing out properly.

Week 4

01/27/2021 at 5pm

First Position Chords, Part 2

Continuing off of last week, we will look at the remaining common first position chords, with a focus on minor chords. Additionally, we will look at some of the 7th chords we have available in the first position.

Week 5

02/03/2021 at 5pm

Inversions and Sus Chords

In this week’s lesson, we will look at what inversions are, and how they are used primarily in the first position. We will also talk about the mysterious world of sus chords, and how they can create more movement and delayed resolution in our progressions.

Week 6

02/10/2021 at 5pm

Barre Chords, Part 1

In this first lesson on barre chords, we will look at two essential major and minor triads. The first set will be based off of a root note on the E string, and the second set will be based off of a root note on the A string. In learning these two sets of chords, we will also look at how we can become more familiar with the fret names on the E and A string.

Week 7

02/17/2021 at 5pm

Barre Chords, Part 2

Following up from our last lesson, we will look at how we construct major 7, dominant 7, and minor 7 chords. Similarly, we will give two voicings for each of these chords so we can create one from a root note on the E string, as well as a root note on the A string.

Week 8

02/24/2021 at 5pm

Barre Chords, Part 3

In our final lesson on barre chords, we will reinforce some of the material covered in week 7 on extensions, as well as discussing how we can voice a half diminished and fully diminished chord in addition to our dominant 7, minor 7, and major 7.

Week 9

03/03/2021 at 5pm

Upper Register Chords, Part 1

In this week’s lesson, we will look at how we can construct 4 note voicings that primarily live from the D string to the high E string. We will also discuss how we can utilize higher register voicings like this to create parts that work well with piano players or fellow rhythm guitar players.

Week 10

03/10/2021 at 5pm

Upper Register Chords, Part 2

In our final lesson of the course, we will continue with our higher register chords, but with a special emphasis on using the extensions from week 7 and 8 to create colorful higher register harmony that compliments the arrangement of a song.
