Beginner Improvising Live Guitar Course Chris Liepe

Guitar 103 - Beginner Improvising with Chris Liepe

This Course is Complete Get Access Access all live courses and 5,000+ HD Lessons

These next six weeks are going to get you comfortably moving around the neck using simple scale patterns and using your ears in a whole new way. That's right, we're going to start learning how to improvise! For most beginner guitar players improvisation sounds incredibly scary. You may think of 10-minute prog ressive rock songs, or your favorite jam band and think "I could never learn how to go on and on for a 6 minute guitar solo." It's true that there are many masters of improv out there, but the underlying mindset and skill set necessary to improvise is something that every beginner guitar player should learn.

Here are few highlights of things we will cover in this course:

  • The Basics of Guitar Scales
  • Practicing over Chords
  • Effective Scale Practice
  • Moving Scale Patterns
  • Basic Rock Soloing
  • Pentatonic, Harmonic Minor
  • Weekly JamTracks!

Date Topic

Week 1

7/21/2016 at 8pm EST Get Access

G Major, 2nd Position

This pattern, like all patterns can be moved around to different keys and used all over the neck. It is comfortable to play and you will get beyond two octaves of notes without having to move around much. Let's learn the pattern and then practice making it sound good over the backing track.

Week 2

7/28/2016 at 8pm EST Get Access

A Minor Pentatonic, 5th Position

This is the sound of rock & roll! We will learn, practice and apply this timeless scale over nice hard hitting groove. We'll also look at creative ways to break it up so that you can use pieces to create rockin' hooks.

Week 3

7/4/2016 at 8pm EST Get Access

Octaves of E Major Up The Neck

There's more than one way to work up the neck, but this multi-octave E Major scale starting with our lowest E and going up into the far reaches of the fretboard will be a great tool for you as you explore the notes all over your guitar! You'll notice that the E note is duplicated in places. In a sense, you are learning multiple 2 string scale patterns that will allow you to connect various parts of the neck.

Week 4

7/11/2016 at 8pm EST Get Access

B Minor And The 7th Fret

While the pentatonic pattern we learned in week two can be used in the same situations as this scale, this full pattern will fill in the note gaps. Learn and apply the full minor scale here.

Week 5

7/18/2016 at 8pm EST Get Access

B Harmonic Minor

Using the same scale pattern we looked at last week, we're going to change one note (the 7th one) and hear how this small modification appears in many minor sounding songs. We will also learn how to move between the sound of the natural minor from week four and apply the harmonic minor where it makes sense.

Week 6

7/25/2016 at 8pm EST Get Access

D Major With b7

This variation on a basic major scale is heard in music all over the place and it confuses beginners and intermediate players alike. When I would try to play along to to what sounded like a major scale song, I'd get to a certain point in the progression and things just felt "off." We will change one note in the major scale pattern we learned previously, play it in the key of D Major and have fun over a new backing track.
