Rhythm Basics

In this first session, we will talk about the basics of strumming on the acoustic guitar. This lesson will focus mostly on rhythms and will help students gain a basic understanding of and the ability to differentiate between whole, half, quarter, and eighth note rhythms.

Week 2

Syncopation and Strumming

The second session will begin where the first one left off. We will introduce triplet and sixteenth note rhythms and the concept of syncopation. This session will be more hands on and the student should plan to have a guitar in hand. We will learn two strumming patterns.

Alternating Bass Notes

This third session we will learn how to spice up our strums by adding bass notes to our strumming patterns. This lesson will be rewarding for students of all skill levels. There will be simple and more complex strumming patterns introduced.

Carter Style

In this fourth session we will build on the previous three sessions. Now things are getting really exciting as the student is able to play three parts simultaneously. We will explore the rhythm playing of Maybelle Carter and will learn a simple version of Wildwood Flower.

Modern Strumming Techniques

In this fifth session we will focus on right and left hand techniques to spice up your strumming. We will explore muting in both hands as well as left hand ornamentations to basic chords. There will be two musical examples, one in a folk style and one in a 1990s alternative pop style.

Introduction to the Right Hand

In our sixth session, we will explore fingerpicking in a classical style. We will discuss the names of the right hand fingers (PIMA) and proper posture. There will be musical examples for you to practice in preparation for Week 7.

Developing the Right Hand

Our seventh session will build on the previous one, introducing more complicated fingerpicking patterns designed to prepare you to learn an excerpt from the classical guitar repertoire.

Week 8

Carcassi #3

In this session, we will explore the first section of Carcassi's 3rd etude. It is a beautiful piece and will challenge both your left and right hands.

Week 9

Bossa Nova

Today's lesson will focus on the Bossa Nova guitar style. We will learn the basic bossa nova rhythm with the alternate bass pattern. We will also introduce several extended chord voicings and you will learn to play a standard progression in the style.

Week 10

Acoustic Blues

This final lesson will focus on different styles of playing blues rhythm guitar. We will learn the blues in the key of E, with some Travis Picking and a turnaround. This will be a culmination of all the skills we've developed throughout the course and will point the student in the direction of further growth and creativity.
