About the Course

One of the main dividing lines between good and great players is a strong understanding of the concept of phrasing. Phrasing generally means grasping how melody works with harmony to create emotion using nothing more than an instrument. In this 10-week course we study the core concepts that are critical to finding your melodic voice on your instrument. Featuring 10 killer backing tracks, we will give you all the pieces necessary to begin crafting beautiful melodies, solos, lead parts and bass lines, no matter your current skill level. This course is perfect for both bass and guitar players.

About our Live Courses

We have upgraded, revamped, and organized in-studio, live weekly workshops broadcasted in 1080p. These focused, task-based workshops include full tablature, interactivity with the instruction, and even homework each week. We are bringing live, educational instruction into the next generation with this platform.

Starting Simple

We begin the course with a series of melodic exercises using only the major pentatonic scale. This week will start off fast, immediately immersing you in fun playing.

Walking Around in Circles

We take a step further beyond the modes with melody ideas built around the circle of 5ths, continuing the usage of passing tones.

Modal Madness I - Mixolydian

We learn some melodic ideas centered around the dominant, or mixolydian, scale.

Modal Madness II - Aeolian

Continuing the theme of modes, we learn several useful melodic phrases over the natural minor/aeolian scale.

Modal Madness III - Dorian

Changing just one note in our minor scale gives us the alluring Dorian minor. We explore it with several melodic ideas.

Modal Madness IV - Lydian

We round out our study of the modes with an analysis of the Lydian scale. We also discuss chord extensions.

Vocalize It

Having now learned a variety of basic phrases using common modes/scales, we begin to apply our understanding of scales and passing tones to a common phrasing technique: vocalization.

What about the notes in between the scale degrees? We learn how to spice up licks, riffs and basslines with simple chromatic passing tones.
