Making Modal Melodies

Making Modal Melodies

8 Week Course - Starts on May 9th at 8pm EST

Access Workshop Learn More

If you’ve taken any courses on modes, you’ve probably noticed that most of the time, the primary focus is on improvisation. You learn a lot of scale patterns, study chord progressions, confuse yourself with a bit of music theory and the cycle goes round and round. This course, by contrast, is focused on songwriting. We’re going to use songwriting and arranging to explore many melody possibilities using the modes. We’re also going to use modes to enhance our creativity while songwriting.

There are two courses on JamPlay that I’ve created before arriving at the material in this course. They are both live archived courses and they are Fretboard Roadmap and Modes Made Easy. Both of these courses focus primarily on improvisation and patterns. These two journeys are fantastic ways to start hearing and implementing modal sounds and the knowledge contained in them will be helpful in getting the most out of this course. I’ll be reviewing key concepts from each course though so don’t feel like you can’t come, hang out and learn if you haven’t taken or fully absorbed those just yet. What makes Making Modal Melodies a great next step is that we make an important transition: we go from reacting to music that we hear to creating music. After we spend some time all getting on the same page modally, we’ll creatively pair modes together, work with scale tones and tap into our inner meanderings to make some modal music that is uniquely you!

Fretboard Roadmap: CAGED

Fretboard Roadmap: CAGED

10 Week Course - Starts on April 25th at 6pm EST

Access Workshop Learn More

There are many great ways to get around the fretboard. In a previous course here on JamPlay, we dove head first into 3 note per string scales, traveled around the guitar neck and took in many different sounds over varying tonal centers. Continuing with the same “system” mindset, we’re going to map the neck using the CAGED system. We will learn how chord forms relate to full seven note scales and how those relate to our arpeggios and pentatonic scales in the same area on the neck. Once you train yourself to see and hear how all these musical tools are related, the creative possibilities are truly endless.

This course is divided up into two different types of sessions. We’ve got the “informational” sessions, and the “creativity” sessions. You’ll have a good week to get new patterns and positions in your fingers and then we go to the recording canvas to make each new bit of information come alive.

You are going to learn how to practice. I’m going to help you to always know what you should practice! I’m going to show you how to be more effective at learning. I’m going to show you how to take what you already know, and make your playing sound so much better!

Many of us have been in the same situation. We have the time to practice, and the desire to practice, but we just don’t know exactly what to do.

These questions may seem familiar. What should I practice? How should I practice? What do I work on next? How do I get out of this rut? Why am I not improving? What am I doing? If you live in this questioning state for too long, you may end up getting quite discouraged and start to resent playing because it’s always the same story. You might seek advice from other guitar players or instructors, and eventually, you’ll give up unless you start to understand one crucial fact. Unless you have goals and work to accomplish them, making progress with your instrument will be difficult.

This course is aimed specifically for anyone who can’t seem to get in the groove when it comes to setting goals, creating meaningful practice times and may find themselves at a loss for what to play when sitting down with the guitar. Be encouraged; it is completely possible to always be improving and and making music. Don’t waste another minute; let’s get started.
