I got my first guitar at 7, didn't really start playing until I was 12. Learned enough so I could play covers and write songs. Then at 19 I decided I wanted to start taking the guitar more seriously. I went on youtube and started educating myself. Due to my love for John Mayer I ended up picking up his style of play (Jimi Hendrix technique) with the thumb for the bass notes. This was the biggest advancement in my guitar playing and it allowed me to finally feel comfortable with my instrument. I know the minor pentatonic scale pretty well and can improvise, but I'm not mind blowing. That's the goal.
