Additional Information: About a Girl
"About a Girl" is the third song on Nirvana's 1989 debut album "Bleach". It's also the first song on the "Unplugged in New York" album which was released as a single in 1994. It is considered Kurt Cobain's first great pop song. It is also about as close as he came to writing a love song.
It is rumored that this song was written after Kurt spent an afternoon listening to "Meet the Beatles" over & over. Mr. Cobain wasn't real excited about this song initially as he said in a 1993 Rolling Stone interview that this was an "R.E.M type of pop song on a grunge record", saying it was a very risky move.
The song was written by Cobain about his girlfriend Tracy Marander. She asked why he hadn't written a song about her & he responded with "About a Girl". The song referenced their screwed up relationship which was triggered by Kurt's lazy demeanor, refusing to get a job. Ironically, Kurt never told Tracy that the song "About a Girl" was written for her. She later found out it was about her in the 1998 documentary "Kurt and Courtney".
