Date: May 5th, 2008 | Length: 5.31 | Instructor: Jim Deeming

Oldcrow asks, "I noticed two of the instructors, Steve Eulberg and Jim Deeming, both emphasize goal setting and proper practice. I find myself reviewing their lessons looking for tips on how to learn as much as I do the content of the lessons, themselves. I wonder if someone has some feedback on the task of learning how to learn, what skills one has to develop to be a student of guitar. Thanks, Derrick" Another benefit of being a member of JamPlay is the video response section. Our expert staff fields questions from our members and provides video responses each week.

Scales and Improvisation - October 10th, 2007 (2 minutes, 43 seconds)
KevinT says, "HI, I checked out Brads scales lesson and have a question. I always warm up with minor pentatonic 1st position so I know it blindfolded, I am working on the others. My question is that when I just start messing around with improv it always ends up still sounding like scales. How do I get away from that? Thanks" View Response
Guitar Picks - January 8th, 2008 (1 minutes, 51 seconds)
Hakkabuff says ,"Hi, my name is Guomundur and I'm from Iceland. My friends call me Gummi (but I know it's hard for non Icelanders to pronounce so I've been called Gummie in non Icelandic communities). Anyway my question is about guitar picks. I have a problem with my fingernails, they tend to be very brittle and break very easily and I remember seeing a guitarist use metal picks that strap onto the fingers. My question is this: Are those kind of picks custom made or can I buy them from a store, and if they're not custom made are there multiple brands out there? My local shops don't have any and they don't have any info on them. My fingernails can break even if I apply pressure on the pads of my fingers. (this condition affects me only in the winter time, genetics what a bore, eh?)" View Response

Bpruett asks, "I bought a handmade classical guitar in Mexico before I knew about nylon and steel strings. My question is can I restring this guitar with steel strings? If so would there be a great difference in the sound if I couldn't put steel strings on it why not?" View Response

Ricky54326 writes: "Hey again JamPlay, this is my 3rd Q&A. I have been playing the violin for 7 years, so I know all the scale theory. I just seem to have a hard time memorizing chords.. do you have any idea how i can use my knowledge of the violin and easily adapt to the guitar? Obviously I have time signature, key signature, etc all down i just have a hard time bringing this knowledge over to the guitar. Please help and keep up the good work." View Response
