sonofazarel asks, "When i practice scales with three notes per string such as the mixolydian position I ascend using my 1st 3rd and 4th fingers, when i descend I use fingers 4, 2 and 1. Is this going to come back and haunt me, should i push myself to use the same fingers both ways?" Another benefit of being a member of JamPlay is the video response section. Our expert staff fields questions from our members and provides video responses each week.

Understanding Notes - March 24th, 2008 (2 minutes, 28 seconds)
Rodwhitney49 asks, "Steve, I have been taking your lessons, and I think they are great, but I am worried that I am missing something. When you start naming off string names and notes that each finger is playing, I am lost instantly. Do i need to understand what you are doing to advance? If so, how do you recommend that I learn what it is you are talking about. I am on your fifth lesson and i am doing alright at playing what you say to play but I am not sure about my level of understanding. What do I do? Thank You For Your Help, rodwhitney49" View Response

Lespauljr asks, "I have noticed that a lot of heavy metal guitarists use the Floyd Rose Whammy Bar system. It seems to give them quite a unique and very "Metal" sound. I am looking to blend the sounds of Heavy Metal and Country to achieve a unique voice. So my question to you is...How can I install a Floyd Rose Whammy Bar system on my acoustic guitar? Jamplay rocks always! Vaya con Dios, lespauljr" View Response
Down Picking and Speed - December 3rd, 2008 (4 minutes, 13 seconds)
Seppo asked "Hi everybody! I've been trying to play some easy metal song like Walk from Pantera or for whom the bell tolls from Metallica, but I've had some problems with fast downpicking parts. I can't keep up with the speed, just playing the open E string fast is hard for me. I was wondering if I might have something wrong with my technique, 'cos the upper part of my right arm gets painful easily from fast downpicking. Sorry for bad grammar and thanks for helping! :)."
