Video Question: Slide Guitar

Return to Video Question and Answer Listings
Date: July 10th, 2008 | Length: 3.06 | Instructor: David MacKenzie

Evilhedgehog asks, "I would absolutely love you guys forever if you would do a lesson on how to properly use a slide (bottleneck?) with an acoustic guitar. I know this is pretty popular in blues styles and I would greatly enjoy being shown more about how I can actually work this into practice music. The biggest question I guess I have though, is what are some popular tunings to use when utilizing a slide, or are there really any special ones?" Thumbpick - June 18th, 2008 (2 minutes, 11 seconds)
Dakota08 asks, "Hey, recently Ive decided to switch my fingerpicking from just my fingers, to a thumbpick. And it seems like the strings I play with the thumbpick seem to overpower the sound that my other 3 fingers makes. Its almost like I cant even hear the strings I hear that I pluck with my fingers now. How do you solve that?" View Response

Stirlingc asks, "Dave, I recently saw your lesson on alternate picking. When i went and tried it on my guitar...it seemed as if my pick would "catch" on the string. When i kept trying to pick upward...i had to force it to come up all the way. Is there something I'm doing wrong when alternate picking? I've been trying the way you hold the pick and it doesn't help much." View Response

Quick Question - March 10th, 2008 (3 minutes, 24 seconds)
Jimmycrowder asks, "Quick question... Do I need to learn to read Notation as a guitarist? I am new to guitar and I am praticing to play in a praise and worship band at church. They play mostly pop and rock songs. They just use a sheet of paper with the chords on top of the verses... Also, could you please recommend a good practice routine? I can play about 1 hour a day " View Response
