Practicing for Real Music

Practicing for Real Music

10 Week Course - Starts on August 29th at 6pm EST

Access Workshop Learn More

Wouldn’t it be great if the exercises we practice to improve our technique could also double as catchy and applicable licks we could incorporate into our everyday creative playing? Many times, we suffer from tunnel vision when it comes to working on technique and get stuck playing the speed game. Or we work ourselves into a state of discouragement because we just can’t seem to get better at a certain aspect of our playing.

Using drills to improve our playing might help us get over certain humps, but ultimately, we want to be efficient with our time, and get to making real music as quickly as possible. This course has been created with the goal of working on various playing techniques and styles while also providing a sizable collection of licks that can be ported and tweaked to work with many different styles of music. So, you’ll get to learn new licks and riffs, improve your technique in many areas and spend time learning how to apply musical passages in different settings.

When you’re learning about music, it can sometimes be easy to get lost in chords, scales, and other note-driven concepts. Notes, however, are only half of the story. Without rhythm, music as we know it wouldn’t exist. In this exciting 10-week course, we take you on a journey in time, groove, and feel as we examine the building blocks of musical structure. This course is designed for both guitarists and bassists of all levels, as the concepts discussed will apply to any instrument. We’ll jam along to 10 amazing backing tracks featuring pro session musicians as we talk about time signatures, subdivisions, polyrhythms, and more.

Making Modal Melodies

Making Modal Melodies

8 Week Course - Course is Complete. Archive Available.

If you’ve taken any courses on modes, you’ve probably noticed that most of the time, the primary focus is on improvisation. You learn a lot of scale patterns, study chord progressions, confuse yourself with a bit of music theory and the cycle goes round and round. This course, by contrast, is focused on songwriting. We’re going to use songwriting and arranging to explore many melody possibilities using the modes. We’re also going to use modes to enhance our creativity while songwriting.

There are two courses on JamPlay that I’ve created before arriving at the material in this course. They are both live archived courses and they are Fretboard Roadmap and Modes Made Easy. Both of these courses focus primarily on improvisation and patterns. These two journeys are fantastic ways to start hearing and implementing modal sounds and the knowledge contained in them will be helpful in getting the most out of this course. I’ll be reviewing key concepts from each course though so don’t feel like you can’t come, hang out and learn if you haven’t taken or fully absorbed those just yet. What makes Making Modal Melodies a great next step is that we make an important transition: we go from reacting to music that we hear to creating music. After we spend some time all getting on the same page modally, we’ll creatively pair modes together, work with scale tones and tap into our inner meanderings to make some modal music that is uniquely you!

There are many great ways to get around the fretboard. In a previous course here on JamPlay, we dove head first into 3 note per string scales, traveled around the guitar neck and took in many different sounds over varying tonal centers. Continuing with the same “system” mindset, we’re going to map the neck using the CAGED system. We will learn how chord forms relate to full seven note scales and how those relate to our arpeggios and pentatonic scales in the same area on the neck. Once you train yourself to see and hear how all these musical tools are related, the creative possibilities are truly endless.

This course is divided up into two different types of sessions. We’ve got the “informational” sessions, and the “creativity” sessions. You’ll have a good week to get new patterns and positions in your fingers and then we go to the recording canvas to make each new bit of information come alive.
