Week 104/26/2017 at 8pm Get Access |
Starting on GWe’ll learn this first pattern of the bunch and play using alternate picking in groups of three notes. Then we’ll work on a "groups of four" sequence that duplicates certain notes within the pattern to make it roll nicely. The sequence works great as a warmup but is also tasty enough to use in solos. We’ll practice over a tonal center of G using a drone track at different tempos. |
Week 205/03/2017 at 8pm Get Access |
Starting on AWe’ll practice the straight pattern over an A drone track with different tempos and then learn a "groups of six" sequence that rises and falls nicely. Then we’ll take a look at a backing track that will help to internalize the unique sound of playing a G major scale that focuses on an A tonal center. |
Week 305/10/2017 at 8pm Get Access |
Starting on BPlayed over the B tonal center, this pattern sounds sneaky and a bit eerie. Because of this, it is extremely fun to play! Once we get the standard pattern in our fingers, we’ll look at a nice “group of six” hammer-on sequence. We’ll get to practice this sequence to our usual drone and metronome but also to an interesting rhythm present in the backing track. |
Week 405/17/2017 at 8pm Get Access |
Starting on CSoothing and freeing when played over the C tonal center, this scale pattern also starts to get us working up into some higher notes on the neck. Instead of working on a unique sequence for this week, we’ll practice both ascending and descending using consecutive picking. We’ll take it slow and get the picking just right! |
Week 505/23/2017 at 8pm Get Access |
Starting on DThis pattern is highly parallel and can feel super aggressive in a positive way when played over the right music and the right feel. We’ll play over a rockin’ track and learn a sequence that might sound like something from a Steve Vai recording. Don’t worry, it sounds good at all tempos too! |
Week 605/31/2017 at 8pm Get Access |
Starting on EMelancholy and definitive, starting on E will give you the straight minor sound. For this sequence, we’re going to practice ascending while descending and descending while ascending. It’ll be a bit of a mind-twisting exercise, but will be a great way to get those fingers moving in a new way. |
Week 706/07/2017 at 8pm Get Access |
Starting on F#We’re starting from the final tone of the G major scale with this week. We’ll work with different tempos per the usual, and we’ll also hear how this pattern sounds over a diminished chord. It’s an unsettling sound. You’ll be begging to hear the resolve to the good old G by the end of the session. Our sequence will be playing each note twice before moving on to the next which will add to the uneasiness nicely! |
Week 806/14/2017 at 8pm Get Access |
Connecting The PatternsWe’ll put all the patterns together into one big exercise this week and practice at different tempos and over different tonal centers. We’ll use a cool groove to inspire us towards greatness. We’ll stick with the pure 3 per string scales this week and go into sequencing next week! |
Week 906/28/2017 at 8pm Get Access |
Sequencing Grab BagRemember all the cool sequences we learned in the previous weeks? For this session, we’ll pick different ones and connect all the patterns together with the different sequences. This is effective and focused practicing. This will be intense, and fun. |
Week 1007/05/2017 at 8pm Get Access |
Improvisation and PhrasingWe could spend another ten weeks just talking about how to phrase and be creative with these wonderful scale patterns. This week will be considered a launchpad for your creativity as you continue to internalize what you’ve learned. We’ll apply slides, bends, and strategic picking to make these scales sound less like patterns and more like building blocks for cool melodies. |
