About the Course

This course will give you all of the building blocks necessary to delve into the world of improvisation. The course starts with a focus on simple single-string scales, and then quickly moves into both open and closed position major scales. With both these positions and the theory behind them under your belt, you will move on to the pentatonic scale, which is probably the most powerful and versatile scale position in existence. You won’t simply be learning scale positions, either. You will learn licks, and have the opportunity to improvise using what you’ve learned, especially in the last lesson where you will combine everything you’ve learned and really unleash your playing.
Here are few highlights of things we will cover in this course:

Single-String Scales

Welcome to the course! This week we will explore the theory of whole and half steps as they relate to the guitar. Also, we will introduce single string scales in 4 different keys (C, G, D, A) on a few different strings. This week will emphasize the importance of learning the notes on the fretboard and will include fun licks on single strings.

The Most Common Chord Progression

Have you always wondered what I IV V chord progressions are? This week we will take a look at this type of progression in four different keys. They will be demonstrated in open position, using power chords, and then barre chords. Next will be a brief explanation of how knowledge of these shapes, combined with fretboard understanding, allows for transposition to all keys. Different strumming patterns will be demonstrated. We will learn how the strumming pattern and choice of chord voicing (open, power, or barre), influence the stylistic elements, and help to define the characteristics of different types of music.

Major Scales

This week we will focus on major scales in open position and learn to understand their true power. Not only that, we will also look at ways to incorporate licks into our rhythm playing, by combining our knowledge of playing chords in open position, with open position scales in the same 4 keys. Fascinating licks will be demonstrated.

Closed Position Scales

Our focus will shift to scales, and their extensions, within a fixed (or closed) position. We will explore four keys and discover useful positions. Beyond that you will learn how to transpose these shapes to improvise or play your favorite licks in any key.

The Pentatonic Playground

This lesson will teach all 5 boxes of the pentatonic scale. You will learn how to play in all 4 of the previously discussed keys as well. Major and minor will be explored, and a brief explanation will be given as to why we may use either, over the same I IV V chord progression.

Putting Everything Together

Putting it all together! In this lesson we will approach improvisation and talk about intervallic and sequential playing. We will apply these concepts to single strings, open position scales, closed position scales, and pentatonic scales. We will learn longer licks that combine all these ideas.
