Sweep Exercises Based on Canon in D

Kris uses Pachelbel's "Canon In D" as a way to practice arpeggio sweeps. He shows how to sweep and alternate pick arpeggios.

Chapter 1: (00:22) Introduction Welcome back to the Phase 2 Artist Series with Kris Norris! In this lesson, Kris teaches an additional sweep picking exercise. He uses the chord progression from Pachelbel's "Canon in D" to practice the crucial mechanics of sweeping.
Chapter 2: (04:57) Chord Progression and Sweep Arpeggio Exercise Watch and Learn

Before you begin to practice the sweep exercise, watch and listen several times as Kris performs it. Remember that it is much easier to play a song or exercise that you have heard several times.

Note: Kris' guitar is tuned down a full step. All pitches sound one full step lower than written in "Supplemental Content."

Chord Progression

Kris plays a basic power chord progression underneath the sweep arpeggios played by the lead guitar. The progression features the following chord changes in D major: I - V - vi - iii - IV - I/V -IV - V. Power chord versions or full major and minor voicings can played underneath the lead guitar part. However, when playing with a high gain tone, full barre chords tend to sound muddy. For this reason, Kris elects to play power chords. The overall quality of the chord is implied by the sweep arpeggios.

Note: Open "Canon in D - Melody & Tapping" for tablature and standard notation to the rhythm progression.

Sweep Arpeggios

The sweep arpeggios used in the exercise follow the progression outlined above. For the tonic chord, Kris uses a root position D major arpeggio. Next, the V chord is played using the same root position arpeggio shape in 9th position. The root position minor pattern is used next for Bm. Notice the fingering that Kris uses for this arpeggio. The first finger is used to play all notes at the 9th fret. Dennis Hodges as well as some other JamPlay instructors prefer to finger the notes on the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st strings like an "open" Dm chord. Experiment with both fingerings to determine which is most comfortable for you.

Picking Pattern

Each arpeggio pattern begins with a root note located on the fifth string. A downward sweeping motion continues from this note. Then, the arpeggio extends to the first string. Two notes are picked on this string. Consequently, some alternate picking is added to the pattern. After the highest note in the arpeggio is struck twice, a descending, downward sweeping motion is performed.

Rhythm

The exercise is played in a steady sextuplet rhythm. Make sure that all notes receive the exact same value! Play the exercise very slowly with a metronome clicking on each eighth note ensure that all of the notes remain even. Then, practice with the metronome clicking on each quarter note. Gradually increase the tempo as you become more comfortable.
Chapter 3: (03:23) Alternate Picked Arpeggios Note: Tablature to this exercise is listed under "Canon in D - Sweeps #2."

As an additional right hand exercise, the arpeggios demonstrated in the previous scenes can be played with strict alternate picking. Begin each arpeggio with a downstroke and continue with an alternating pattern.

In addition, a brief melodic line is now added to the E string of the pattern. All of the melody notes are diatonic to the D major scale.

Practice Tips

-Use the same practice guidelines listed under the previous scene when practicing this exercise. The exercise is played in a steady sextuplet rhythm. Make sure that all notes receive the exact same value! Play the exercise very slowly with a metronome to ensure that all of the notes remain even. Gradually increase the tempo as you become more comfortable.

-Feel free to drill miniature sections of the exercise. Isolate a specific arpeggio or even a small section of an arpeggio or scalar pattern. Kris demonstrates this practice technique at 01:47.

Additional Practice

Experiment with adding your own variations to the exercise. Remember that technical practice is more effective and enjoyable when creative elements are involved. For example, Kris demonstrates how tapping can be added to each arpeggio pattern.
Chapter 4: (00:51) Demo This performance begins with the melody of "Canon in D" played on the fifth string. Then, the sweeping exercise begins.

Over the backing track, practice all of the variations outlined in the previous two scenes. Begin with the basic sweep pattern. Then, play through the exercise with alternating picking. Finally, work through the variation that includes tapping.

This is sick man! How exactly to you get the sweep picking tone though, where it sounds different in the lower strings than the higher strings when sweeping. I know you use the rhythm pickup, but that doesn't seem to completely get that tone. If you can have a segment on that, that would be great too!

No offense, but Rob Chappers version is a little better. He added the fourth into each pattern, so he didn't need to double pick. IMO sounds a little better.

About Kris Norris View Full Biography Mr. Kris Norris was born August, 31 1978 in Canton, Ohio. He began playing around the age of 14. Early on the self-taught guitarist took an interest in metal and began playing in a local Virginia metal band. Kris' early influences were rooted in Swedish metal, bands include In Flames, Dark Tranquility, and Edge of Sanity. Norwegian Black metal also played a part in Kris' interest including early Mayhem, Emperor, and Ulver. Kris started Disinterment with future Darkest Hour bandmate Ryan Parrish. Disinterment lasted over 6 years and developed a local following in the Virginia metal by being some of the first players to incorporate Swedish metal and 3 guitar players.

College Days
When Kris was 17 he attended Virgina Commonwealth University School of Music (VCU). He studied Music composition and focused on film with world renowned composer Dika Newlin. Kris also studied classical guitar with John Patykula, prize student of Jesus Silva who was the prize student of Andre Segovia. Kris left the University after 6 years of studies. After college, he began his teaching career instructing private students and giving lessons at Mars Music. Kris' teaching career would eventually be put on hold to join Darkest Hour.

Darkest Hour Days
Kris' first album with Darkest Hour ,Hidden Hands Of A Sadist Nation, the 2005 release was recorded at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, Sweden with producer Fredrik Nordstrom. Ironically, the same studio facilitated many of Kris' influences 10 years prior.

Darkest Hour's next release, Undoing Ruin allowed Kris to stretch his wings and show what he could truly do on the instrument with the addition of several solos. The record was produced by Canadian metal mastermind Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad, Steve Vai). Townsend was a big part of pushing Kris to his own musical potential on Undoing Ruin and even more so on the follow up record, Deliver Us.

Deliver Us was released in 2007 and debuted at 110 on the Billboard Chart. This would be the last Darkest Hour record with Kris as a member. The album like its predecessor was also produced by Devin Townsend, who was able to take a bigger hand in its production. Devin pushed Kris to experiment with his own playing and to hone in on his strongest abilities.

Kris' career with Darkest Hour spanned 6 years, 23 countries, 4 continents, countless tours, 3 albums, near 200,000 album sales, and many lifelong friendships made along the way. With the birth of his son in 2008, Kris felt he needed to take his career closer to home while still focusing on music and guitar. In order for Darkest Hour to devote 100% to their music and touring, Kris came to the decision to amicably part ways with the band.

His Future:
As of early 2009, Kris has full sponsorships from ESP, EMG, Peavey, DigiTech, InTune, and Morley. Currently, Kris is producing and mixing aspiring metal acts while also working for Final Symphony Studios out of Charlottesville, Virgina. Kris also edits records for James Murphy (Testament, Obituary, Death) at Safehouse Productions. Kris has released his first solo record through Magna Carta Records, entitled Icons Of The Illogical. His solo effort was recorded at Karma Productions with Cory Smoot (GWAR) and features vocals from Lamb Of God frontman Randy Blythe.
