Substrate - Part IV: Directional Picking
We’ve gotten pretty hardcore with our 2 hand sync work - Alternate Picking is a great place to tie it all together, then legato will challenge us a bit more knowing when to turn it on and turn it off, but by focusing on Directional Picking, we can really pinpoint our rhythmic problems, as the tendency of these to turn out sounding like triplets is a huge problem - Don’t let the picking technique dictate the rhythm, only the way you change between strings!
Directional picking is a great way to discover new ways to generate speed, as well as some awesome creative lines. To pull of directional picking well, we need to have a great sense of awareness in what we’re doing and why, as this is all a numbers game! Once you get it, you get it - and you can begin to use the numbers to your advantage to come up with cool lines combining all of the picking techniques we’ve discussed so far. Remember, odd numbers per string keep you going in the direction of your starting pick stroke, while even number notes per string will turn you around in the other direction - simple as that! It’s the very moment you use the same pick stroke direction as your LAST picked note and FLOW THROUGH IT into your FIRST picked note of the next string (Down // Up // Down - DOWN // Up // Down // Up - UP // Down).
This first lick is going to help us get super acquainted with some different ways to tie some directionally picked lines together - We’ll take each measure slowly and add it together piece by piece, Talking about what’s going on as we move through this.
For the second Lick on Measure 6, we’ll be using thumb muting in an arpeggio setting… We’ll be making an F augmented7 add13 arpeggio using a 1 - 1 -3 pattern starting on fret 8 on the A string, then 7 on the D string, then 6 7 9 on the G string — Those numbers correlate to the number of notes on a string. They also tell us that we will be directionally picking through this is they are all odd numbers! We then take that exact same shape up to the next octave on fret 10 on the b string using what I call an octave portal - ignore everything else other then this is EXACTLY when you just did! Then I ascending 10, 11, 12, 13 starting on an upstroke and landing on a down stroke on 13 before pulling off to fret 10 to descend down a new arpeggio shape using directional picking - fret 11 on the b string, then 14 on the G string pulled off to fret 10 on the G string. Then, we slide on our first finger to fret 12 to change positions, and descend down the Adominant7 on frets 14 on the D string and 16 on the A string pulling off to fret 12.
Then we slide up from fret 12 to 13 with our first finger to change positions, so that we can now ascending up a Bbmajr7 Arpeggio using the rolling technique on frets 15 across the D, G and B string, before hitting 13 with our fully directionally picked line, then upstroke 17 and pulling off to 13 before bending 16 up to 17 with a rake and squeegee mute a nice vibrato too close it out.
The notion of using all of what we’ve done together to make musical lines that are both fun and challenging is the most rewarding part of music. Being able to come up with your own lines and ways to exercise and expand your abilities is one of the most powerful ways to grow in my opinion.

Dan Sugarman is a 26 year old guitarist, producer, teacher and songwriter hailing from the South Bay of Los Angeles, CA. His tenacity and dedication to the art of music and guitar led him to the lead guitar position in the internationally touring band, As Blood Runs Black. Now as a solo artist, Dan continues to work on his original music being released through Patreon, and is currently producing and engineering other bands & artists at Sugartone Studios, and composing for film & television. He also maintains an ever-growing student body as a private guitar teacher, mentor, and educator in the crafts of songwriting, creativity, and modern day recording techniques.
